In Choiak of the past 34th year of Caesar, I hired Pennion, a donkey-driver, to take care of my pack-animals, and to remain with them through the summer until Choiak of the 35th year of Caesar, and to carry out everything that is incumbent on a donkey-driver; the aforesaid man agreed.
But after spending the winter of the 34th year of Caesar and also remaining through the summer, he ran off with the donkey-gear from the carrying-frames, having decided that things were going well (for him). At first, by neglecting the donkeys, they became weak; and by injuring them he has caused the loss of a donkey of mine worth 28 silver drachmas, and after bringing in (another) donkey, it has fallen (and been ruined).
Moreover, after condemning/abandoning the rest of my animals, he still has, from the month Thoth of the 35th year of Caesar, three of my sacks, not having handed over to me either the pack-saddles (sagai) or the other tools/gear of the donkeys; and because of this my donkeys have been left idle.
Therefore I submit this petition to you, so that, after securing the accused man, you may send him to those to whom it belongs (i.e., the proper authorities), and in their presence he may be compelled to pay me the price of the donkey, and compensation for the donkeys’ idleness, and (return) the sacks and the pack-saddles and the tools, so that I may obtain what is due.
