Γεώργιον τὸν σύμμαχον, ὡς καὶ διʼ ἑτέρας ἐπιστολῆς ἐδήλωσα, πέμψον προσεδρεύσαντα τῷ κυρίῳ Θεοπέμπτῳ, ὥστε διʼ αὐτοῦ πεμφθῆναι τὴν ταχεῖαν καὶ ἀναγκαίαν ἀπόκρισιν, ἣν τῷ κυρίῳ ὑπὲρ ἐμοῦ πεμφθέντι· ἀλλὰ μὴν καὶ ἄλλον τῶν προσεδρευσάντων τῇ σῇ ποθεινότητι παρακόμισον τὸν ἐκεῖ φυλαττόμενον, ἀλλὰ μὴν καὶ ἄλλοις τρισὶ κωμάρχαις σοῖς, ἵνα φυλαττόμενος ἐπιμελῶς ἔλθῃ· ὑπεσχόμην γὰρ αὐτὸν ἀναγαγεῖν καὶ ἀπολῦσαι. καὶ ἴσως μὲν τοῦτο ἀκούων οὐ δραπετεύσει· πλὴν κάλλιον τῆς ἀσφαλείας γενέσθαι. καὶ διὰ τοῦτο βούλομαι ἢ μετὰ πλήθους αὐτὸν ἀνελθεῖν ἤγουν ξύλον ἔχοντα ἐν τοῖς ποσίν, ὥστε μὴ δυνηθῆναι ἐκ τοῦ πλοίου λαθεῖν καὶ διαφυγεῖν. πάνυ γάρ με ἔβλαψεν καὶ ἐζημίωσεν καὶ ἀπώλεσεν ἡ τοῦ προτέρου φυγή. ἀλλʼ οὕτω σε ὁ θεὸς ἐλεήσῃ, ἐπιμελῶς πάνυ παράπεμψον αὐτόν, ἵνα μὴ δυνηθῇ φυγεῖν.

English Translation

“Send Georgios the ally, as I also made clear in another letter, after he has attended upon the lord Theopemptos, so that through him the swift and necessary reply may be sent—the reply to the lord who was sent on my behalf.

And indeed, also send another of those who have been in attendance to your belovedness, to escort the man who is being kept under guard there; and indeed also (send word) to three other village-headmen of yours, so that, being carefully guarded, he may come. For I promised to bring him up and release him.

And perhaps, hearing this, he will not run away; nevertheless, it is better for security to be ensured. And for this reason I want him either to come up with a crowd, or else with a wooden restraint on his feet, so that he may not be able to slip away from the boat unnoticed and escape. For the previous man’s flight greatly harmed me and caused me loss and ruined me.

But may God thus have mercy on you: very carefully send him along, so that he may not be able to flee.
