Greek Text and English Translation

Words split across lines have been rejoined, and punctuation has been lightly normalized. Unclear or abbreviated readings are identified in the notes. No continuous Latin text is identifiable; the isolated “r” and “v” appear to be stray characters or document markers.

English Translation

In the name of the holy and life-giving Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. In the fourth year of the reign of our most divine lord Flavius Heraclius, eternal Augustus and Emperor, on the twelfth of Hathyr, in the third indiction.

To the most illustrious Flavius Victor, son of Cyrus of most excellent memory, of the city of the Hermopolites, from Aurelius Abramius, son of Andreas, whose mother is Kas, a vine-grower from the locality of Piknion in the Hermopolite district: greetings.

I acknowledge that I have received from you, and have been paid in full, the entire price of one hundred and twenty measures of wine, making 120 measures of wine. I shall deliver these to you in the month of Mesore of the coming fourth indiction, God willing, in new wine of the finest and satisfactory quality, measured by your wine jar. If any of it is found to be vinegar, unfermented, or foul-smelling before the month of Tybi of that same indiction, I undertake to replace it for you with good wine without delay. But if [unclear wording, apparently concerning failure to meet the deadline], I shall pay two gold solidi, at my own risk and from the resources of my estate. This document is valid and binding, and, upon being formally questioned, I gave my assent.

I, Aurelius Abramius, son of Andreas, the aforementioned, have executed this document as stated above.

I, Aurelius P—, son of Victor, of Hermopolis, wrote on his behalf, since he does not know how to write.

I, Aurelius Basilius, son of Kollouthos, of Hermopolis, bear witness to this document, having heard its acknowledgment from the person who executed it.

I, Vic—, bear witness to this document, having heard its acknowledgment from the person who executed it.

Through me, John, [unclear letters or title], notary.

Endorsement: Written undertaking for 120 measures of wine, executed by Abramius, son of Andreas, vine-grower from the hamlet of Piknion in the Hermopolite district.

Textual Notes

  • ρκ: The Greek numeral for 120.
  • επροθεσμ: The supplied reading is incomplete or corrupt. Its position suggests a clause about missing the delivery deadline, but its exact wording cannot be recovered confidently.
  • ἀποίητος: Literally “unmade” or “unfinished”; in this wine-quality clause, probably “unfermented” or “not properly matured.”
  • Π, Βικ, and οηλν: These have been retained without speculative expansion. “Βικ” probably abbreviates a name beginning Vik-; συμβολαιογρ. is an abbreviation for “notary.”
  • Indiction: A year within a recurring fifteen-year administrative and taxation cycle.
